I had never heard of the book, but looked it up and just ordered it! Part I of a trilogy -- did you read all of them? And yes, I came across the fact that whales' sounds travel across huge distances. Didn't know about elephants.
I read at least the first two. When I read what you write about, I look forward to hearing what you think about the first one. Quite a seminal book for me when I read it in 1998, I think. It certainly changed my definition of what is a "successful species."
Oddly enough, the fact that humpback whales & their song played a part in the movie Star Trek IV : The Voyage Home kindled a certain interest in them, personally.
The singer Judy Collins also featured whale song in a 1970s album called " Whales and Nightingales ", IIRC.
They and elephants can transmit super low frequencies over tremendous distances. Jessica, have you read, “Ishmael”? By Daniel Quinn

It should arrive tomorrow -- I'll read it right away and will let you know 😉.

I never watched any Star Treck movies, but that's interesting! I'll try to find the Judy Colins song.
