i'm, sure if the "machine guns" had found the hash, they would have given you a bad time, just for show, and then confiscated it for "personal use". an old friend, wondering around the middle east in the late 60's came across a column of soldiers in the syrian army marching somewhere, rather slowly, as little groups of men were always dropping out of the front of the column to have some tea and a "smoke", and then rejoining at the end as the column passed by.

YES! I think it's a remnant of colonialism that "smoke" and other substances were illegal, because in almost all non-European contries that I visited people certainly used the stuff. In fact, in Nepal etc. it was legal. Not the smuggling, though; I was in jail in Pakistan for one night... That will be Part III. Fun times.

cool / don’t be shy about writing personal stories / a lot of people have become famous that way / you forgot to tell us about selling the hashish to the GIs though

I'm having a blast thinking back on these crazy times. The selling -- by and large uneventful; very different scene from "The Wire", thank goodness.
