Wow. As a lifelong vegetarian, I have heard this "fish don't feel pain" argument from vegans who think its ok to eat seafood. I had pet fish growing up, and I was always skeptical, though I didn't look up the science. I'm going to forward your post to those folks. You have packed an incredible amount of information. Thanks from a new subscriber!
Thank you! I always thought as a vegetarian (which I was many years before turning vegan) one shouldn't eat fish because they're animals and one has to kill them. Not everybody seems to agree... Weird. I was going to write about Eric Adams who is vegan, being caught eating a fish sandwich... Big controversy: IS he vegan or not? 😉 I've become a lot less militant and more tolerant; anybody who is trying hard not to eat animals gets brownie-points in my book. Thanks for subscribing; I looked at your substack and subscribed too. You provide an in-depth analysis into the roots of climate change that I couldn't find anywhere else unless I'd spend tons of time.
I can see that. Being more hardcore actually pushes people away. I do believe that we would have had greater success with promoting vegetarianism if the early activists were less aggressive. But I see their point too. Meat is indeed murder, but most people don't like being called a murderer, haha. Like you, I just encourage people to give it a try. Even a 50% reduction on a large scale will do our planet good.
Thanks for your kind words!! I am a first time online writer and getting feedback is hard. I am glad to hear you find it useful - gives me more motivation to produce quality content. If you have some thoughts, feel free to comment there!
Gosh, this was so well written. I learned so much about the way fish (or fishes) think, feel and live! I haven't eaten fish for almost a year now and will never go back. It's given me a whole new level of curiosity and respect into the marvellous underwater world when I'm down there!
In fact, I had an incredible vegan "fish" burger the other day and was ecstatic because I could enjoy the taste without the cruelty. Thanks Jessica!
