I most certainly believe that this is the case. While narcissists (look at most of the oligarchs...) are pathologically unable to be empathetic, many people could enhance their capacity if they had any idea that this is a desirable quality. I think the practice of empathy/compassion should be taught in elementary school, and I'm convinced that the mindless consumption of dead animals has a lot to do with wars and aggression.
